Black-Eyed Peas
Black-eyed peas, or cow peas, are native to North Africa and were probably introduced to the South by African Slaves and Spanish explorers. Black-eyed peas have long been a New Year's Day tradition in the South and it is believed that eating them will bring good luck in the coming year. Most often, they are eaten as a side dish but people who love them can make them into a main course with a side of cornbread.
